Guards writing number plates in a register cannot keep up with busy gates, and paper parking tickets get lost. Here is how ANPR gate and parking systems work, what hardware you need, and how to protect residents' privacy.

ANPR, or automatic number-plate recognition, reads a vehicle's plate with a camera and decides in a second whether it may enter. For housing societies, offices, factories, malls, hospitals, hotels and parking lots, it replaces handwritten registers and paper tickets.

How an ANPR gate works

  1. A camera reads the plate as the vehicle approaches.
  2. The system checks it against residents, staff, visitor passes, the blacklist and parking rules.
  3. It decides Allow, Deny, Alert or Pay.
  4. If allowed, it opens the boom barrier and logs the entry with a photo.

A good system is cautious: in Hayat Gate, a plate that is one character off never opens the barrier by itself; it alerts the guard.

Hardware you can buy locally

  • Cameras: ordinary IP cameras that stream RTSP, read by a PC agent at the gate that works without internet, or Hikvision and Dahua ANPR cameras that read plates in the camera.
  • Barrier control: a relay that presses the barrier's own OPEN button for about half a second, wired alongside it rather than into the motor. Shelly, KMtronic, ESP32, Waveshare, Advantech ADAM and USB relays are common options, or the camera's alarm output.
  • Exit printer (80 mm) for parking receipts, and a UPS so the gate keeps working in load-shedding.

Residents, staff and visitors

Registered vehicles open automatically. Visitors arrive with a pass on their phone. Guards use a guard screen on a phone or the gate PC to open the barrier with a reason, type plates by hand, check visitors in and handle alerts. Blacklisted vehicles raise an alarm and alert phones get an SMS.

Ticketless paid parking

The plate is read at entry and again at exit; the fee is worked out from the time inside, and the barrier opens once paid. Tariffs per vehicle class can include free minutes, slabs, an hourly rate, a daily cap, a night rate, a lost-ticket fee and grace minutes. Drivers can pay by cash, card, JazzCash, Easypaisa, Raast, bank or a pay-link QR, or on a public pay-by-plate page before they reach the car.

Monthly passes

Pass plans for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months are invoiced through your ERP, with auto-renew. An overdue pass is suspended and resumes by itself when paid, so the guard never has to argue.

Privacy matters

  • Keep photos for a set period (90 days by default in Hayat) and delete older ones automatically.
  • Store CNIC and phone numbers encrypted; show guards masked CNICs.
  • Let residents see their own vehicles' entries, without photos.
  • Put up a sign at each gate saying plates are read and recorded for security.

Frequently asked questions

What is ANPR?

ANPR, automatic number-plate recognition, uses a camera to read vehicle number plates so a system can decide whether to open a gate, log the entry or charge for parking.

Do I need special ANPR cameras?

Not necessarily. Hayat Gate works with ordinary IP cameras that stream RTSP, read by a PC agent at the gate, or with Hikvision and Dahua ANPR cameras that read plates in the camera.
